Panther Baseball Sends Detroit Packing

Offense explodes for 12 runs in final five innings

CHICAGO -- After losing in the first round of the MCC Baseball Tournament to host team UIC, the UWM baseball team kept its season alive in the tournament with a 12-3 win over Detroit on Saturday.

The win means that UWM plays Wright State on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. A win in that game and two wins on Monday would give UWM the championship and a berth in the NCAA Regionals.

In the win against Detroit, Chad Sadowski pitched six shutout innings, striking out seven, before the UWM offense gave the Panthers a seven-run lead. Sadowski entered the game tied for the school-record for strikeouts in a season, and now has sole possession of the mark.

Brian Gould, Kyle Raeder and David Risser pitched the final three innings.

The Panthers broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when J.J. Kotarak hit a solo home run. UWM broke the game open with six runs inteh sixth inning. Todd Ludwig hit his 17th home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the inning. Brett Huebner added a two-run single in the sixth.

Kotarak added an RBI in the seventh when he brought in Todd Ludwig, who singled to lead off the inning.

Jason Crawford hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to spark a four-run inning.

In the Panthers' opening round loss, UIC scored five runs in the last two innings for a 12-7 win. Corey Clemmons pitched seven innings but allowed eight earned runs and picked up the loss.

Steve Tylke led the Panthers' offensive attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, and three RBIs. Tylke, the MCC's Newcomer of the Year, added a number of solid plays at third base in the game.
