Panthers Drop UAB for First Win of Season
March 15, 1999 MILWAUKEE - It took nine games, but the UWM baseball team found its way into the win column, defeating Alabama-Birmingham, 11-7, on the road on Sunday. The Panthers (1-9 overall) remain on the road until March 20, with games at Jacksonville State, Tennessee Tech, Belmont, Middle Tennessee State and Western Illinois. In the win against UAB on Mar. 14, the Panthers belted out 16 hits, including five by junior second baseman Steve Tylke (Greenfield, Wis.-Greenfield/Coastal Carolina) and four by sophomore third baseman Jason Crawford (Park Ridge, Ill.-Woodstock/Austin Peay). Corey Clemmons (Pardeeville, Wis.-Portage/Madison Area Tech) picked up the win and improved his season record to 1-1. Clemmons pitched seven innings, yielding 10 hits and three earned runs. Redshirt freshman Matt Friesleben (Waukesha, Wis.-South) picked up the save after pitching two shutout innings. The scheduled Mar. 13 game against UAB was rained out and made up as part of a doubleheader on Mar. 14. UAB posted a 4-3 win in the game. The Blazers scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh inning on a botched pick-off attempt. Chad Sadowski (Cudahy, Wis.-Cudahy) pitched a complete game and allowed one earned run, but picked up the loss.
The Panthers also played Murray State on Mar. 12 and lost, 9-7. Andy Neary (Oconomowoc, Wis.-Oconomowoc) allowed four runs in the fourth inning, giving Murray State the lead for good.
