Panthers Cross Country Teams Open Season Strong at Detroit-Mercy Invite

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's cross country teams both opened their seasons strong at the Detroit-Mercy Invitational this morning in Detroit, Mich., both finishing in the top-four in a field of 10 teams.

The women's team finished third overall with 90 points, while the men finished fourth with 131. The women trailed No. 1 finisher Eastern Michigan by 35 points and No. 2 Hillsdale College by 14. Invitational host and fellow MCC school Detroit-Mercy followed closely in fourth place, just two points behind UWM. Sophomore Brianne Peterson was the Panthers' top finisher, placing 9th in a time of 19:05 on the 5K (3.1 mile) course. She was followed closely in 10th place by teammate freshman Abby Hurst, with sophomore Ann Lewis coming in at 16th with a time of 19:24.

On the men's side, Eastern Michigan blew out the competition, placing in first with 30 points-77 points ahead of the next team. They were followed by Western Ontario with 107, Hillsdale College with 114 and UWM with 131. Aaron Nodolf was the top finisher for the Panther men, placing 14th in a time of 21:08 on the four-mile course. He as followed by Matt Finger who finished 23rd in 21:44, then by Ryan Powell in 34th (21:39) and Marshall Finnegan in 36th (21:40).

Next up for the Panthers in the Briggs and Stratton Run on Sept. 25, which has become a tradition for the UWM squad. The run begins at 10 a.m. in Milwaukee.
