Northern Iowa Panther Invitational is first stop for Milwaukee track and field teams
Jan. 29, 2002 MILWAUKEE - Cedar Falls, Iowa, is the destination this week for the Panther track and field teams, as they head west to compete in the Northern Iowa Invitational. Last week, the Panthers competed in the Butler Invitational, a non-scoring meet. The Panthers didn't let the lack of points stop them, as they had several strong performances on the afternoon. Last Week Cornelius Hill and Jon Manke both helped to carry the Panthers at Butler. Hill won the mile for the second straight week, while Manke was second in the shot put and fourth in the weight throw. Ken Hunt also won the triple jump for the second consecutive week, while Nick Davis took first in the high jump and third in the triple. Eric Gresham also pulled off a victory, claiming first in the 400m dash. For The Women Kristy Naef and Stephanie Kenesie took fouth and fifth in the long jump, while Naef added a fifth place finish in the 60m low hurdles and an 11th place finish in the 200m dash. Abby Hurst also took third in the mile. Record Breakers Cornelius Hill and Jon Manke each set a new UWM record with their performance over the weekend. Hill shattered the old record in the mile, running 4:08.64. Manke broke the old record in the 35lb. weight throw, tossing 50'8 3/4". Ken Hunt was also just shy of a record, as his leap of 48'10 1/4" was just an inch and a quarter shy of the school mark of 48'11 1/2". In Attendance Stephanie Kenesie participated in the Apple Conference on alcohol and drug abuse prevention and education, sponsored by the University of Virginia, on Jan. 18-20. Kenesie was one of two UWM students and four administrators to attend the conference. Up Next The Panthers road trip through Iowa continues next week when UWM heads to Ames, Iowa, for the Cyclone Invitational. The two-day meet will be one of the final tune-ups for Milwaukee before the Horizon League Championships on Feb. 23 and 24. |
