Manke Earns Conference Honors For Shot Put
Panther tracksters begin road stretch at Indianapolis
Jan. 26, 2000 MILWAUKEE - The UW-Milwaukee Track and Field teams, fresh off two fourth-place finishes at their own invitational last Friday, travel to Indianapolis to take part in the Smith-Barney Invitational on Saturday, January 29, 2000. Butler University hosts the 13-team invite. The meet starts at 9 a.m. with the pole vault, weight throw and shot put, which will be held in the SerVaas Center. Everything else will commence at 4:15 p.m. inside the National Institute for Fitness and Sport (NIFS). The Panther men are led by junior Jon Manke (Green Bay, Wis.), who shattered Bill Meyer's 30-year-old school shot put record last weekend with a mark of 54-8 ½, and is now setting his sights on the NCAA Provisional mark. Manke was named Midwestern Collegiate Conference Athlete of the Week for his record-setting performance. Senior Nate Andrews (Howards Grove, Wis.) is looking to better his time in the 55-meter high hurdles (7.73) and the 200-meter dash (23.60). As for the women, freshman Stephanie Kenesie (Bristol, Wis.) is striving to earn another win in either the long or triple jumps. Last Friday, Kenesie was victorious in the long jump (18-2 ¼) and finished third in the triple jump, leaping 36-0 ¾. Also looking for a repeat performance is sophomore Liz Pesch (Fond du Lac, Wis.). Pesch won the 600-meter dash last Friday. She will be looking to set a personal best in the 800-meter run on Saturday. After the Smith-Barney Invite, UW-Milwaukee will travel to Normal, Ill., to take part in the Illinois State Redbird Open, which will take place Saturday, February 5, 2000. |
