Panthers Run Well Across Town
Thiel wins two events to lead Panthers
May 3, 2002 MILWAUKEE - Lynda Thiel took a pair of first-place finishes to lead the UWM track and field teams at the Marquette Invitational Friday afternoon at Valley Fields. Thiel won the women's pole vault with a personal-best height of 10'9". She also took first in the javelin with a throw of 115'1". Thiel also finished second in the high jump with a best effort of 5'1 1/4". Other winners for the Panthers included Nicole Frey in the women's 100m dash with a time of 12.59 and Jessica Hendree in the 400m hurdles in 1:05.19. Kalin Konop added the other Panther win on the day, winning the long jump with a leap of 16'10 3/4". Other strong performances by the Panther women included Nicole Frey and Teresa Braunreiter finishing second and third in the 200m. Frey's time was 25.66, while Braunreiter was clocked at 26.44. Jessica Hendree added a fifth-place finish in the 200m, running in 26.99. Braunreiter would add a third-place spot in the 400m with a time of 59.43. In the women's 800m, Katie Seep took third with a time of 2:19.57, followed by Karen Brisky in sixth in 2:24.38 and Natalie Miko in seventh in 2:25.63. Abby Hurst finished third in the 1,500m, finishing in 4:40.16. Kristy Naef led a quartet of Panthers in the 100m hurdles, finishing third in 15.21. Stephanie Kenesie finished fourth in 15.38, followed by Jill Naus in fifth in 15.47 and Michelle Fritsch in sixth with a time of 16.65. Naus added a third-place finish in the 400m hurdles, finishing in 1:07.06. On the men's side, Kyle Huebner, Nick Viall and Cornelius Hill each grabbed a victory to lead the Panthers. Huebner took first in the high jump, jumping 6'6". Viall won the 800m in 1:55.66, while Hill took first in the 1,500m with a time of 3:49.88. Adam Hobler contributed with a fifth-place mark in the 200m dash with a time of 23.08. In the 800m, Nick Bruskewitz finished third with a time of 1:57.91. Jeremy Dunn was fifth in 1:58.40, followed by Micah Hanthorn in 1:58.78 and Andy Kivioja in 2:00.08. Following Hill in the mile was Pat Harrington in fifth place with a time of 4:04.33 and Steve Saul in sixth in 4:07.44. Dan O'Leary took second in the 400m hurdles in 57.42, followed by Nick Pryor in 58.17. O'Leary would also finish fifth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.84. The Panthers would also finish second in both the 400m relay and the 1,600m relay, finishing the 400m relay in 44.24 and the mile in 3:21.20. In throwing events, Jon Manke took second in the shot put with a throw of 54'5 1/4", while Alex Mueller was fifth with a throw of 44'6 1/4". Manke also finished third in the hammer with a throw of 150'5", followed by Mueller in fourth with an effort of 140'7". Mueller would also finish fifth in the discus with a throw of 125'2", while Steve Hermann finished second in the javelin with a throw of 120'8". Several Panthers will compete tomorrow at the Wisconsin Twilight meet in Madison. Tomorrow's meet will be the last competition before the Horizon League Championships, which begin Thursday in Indianapolis. |
