UWM Men's Swim Team Tallies up a Victory at Wheaton Invite
Women's Team Takes Third
Dec. 4, 1999 Milwaukee - UWM men's swimming team captured first place at the Wheaton Invitational Dec. 3-4 with 893 points ahead of second-place UW-Stevens Point (694.50). The women's team took third at the invite with 555.50 points behind Wheaton College (1018.50) and UW-Stevens Point (660.50). The men grabbed the top two places in four events and took eight firsts overall. Seniors Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg and Andrew Babcock along with freshmen Peter Clark and David Faust lead the team to their victory. Van Den Wymelenberg captured a first in the 100-yard freestyle and seconds in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.49) and in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.99). Andrew Babcock took first in the 200-yard (1:56.90) and 100-yard (49.90) butterfly events and helped out in two second-place finishes in the 400-yard medley relay and 200-yard medley relay. Clark finished first in the 500-yard freestyle and second in the 200-yard butterfly. The men's 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams were also victorious. Other second place finishes for the Panthers were junior Joel White in the 400-yard individual medley (4:17.51), junior Bill Kuri in the 100-yard backstroke (51.64), sophomore Dan Babcock in the 100-yard butterfly (50.98), freshman Matt Schmaling in the 50-yard freestyle (21.55), freshman David Faust in the 500-yard freestyle, freshman Matt Schmaling in the 100-yard freestyle and the relay team of Kuri, Van Den Wymelenberg, A. Babcock, and Schmaling in the 200-yard medley relay (1:34.71) and 400-yard medley relay (3:27.77). The women's team was led by a second place finishes by junior captain Randi Fletcher in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.84) and freshman Jenna Raymond in the 1650-yard freestyle (18.41.72). Sophomore Leslie Brock earned a third place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (4:50.51). Freshman Beth Watt (100 fly, 1:00.18) and Rachel Smith (200 breast, 2:30.41) each placed fourth in their respective events. The 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay teams both finished fifth. Smith placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke, as well as freshman Jenny Theis did in the 200-yard backstroke and sophomore Kelly Goetsch in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.78). The teams take a break from the water until Dec. 31, 1999 when they travel to the Ed Kennedy Relays in Florida. The Time Trial 100's take place the following weekend in Florida as well on Jan. 4, 2000. |
