MILWAUKEE - UWM Head Coach Dave Clark announced five recruits have signed National Letters of Intent to swim for the Panthers. The recruits are: Leslie Brock (Appleton, WI-North), Kelly Goetsch (Plymouth, WI-Plymouth) Todd Murray (Brookfield, WI-East), Erin Polleya (Lincolnwood, IL-Niles West), and Mike Smith (Brookfield, WI-Central).

Three others, Erin McCauley (Genoa City, WI-Lake Geneva Badger), Marco Gruchalski (St. Francis, WI-St. Francis), and Krystal Westfahl (Appleton, WI-West), have been accepted to UWM and have indicated they will swim for the Panthers.

Brock was a state finalist in 200- and 500-freestyles in 1996 and 1997 State Division 1 meets. She was all-state on the 200 medley relay and a YMCA national qualifier in the 200- and 500-free. She is the sister of Panther swimmer Claire Brock. "Leslie is a very talented athlete, said Clark. I expect her to have an immediate impact on the team in any number of events, especially relays."

Goetsch is a state finalist 200 free and 100 butterfly at the Division 2 state meet in 1997. "Kelly didnt start swimming until high school, said Clark. Because of this she has a lot of enthusiasm and drive to succeed. She had consistent drops in her high school times, which I expect to continue. She will be a solid contender for relay spots."

Gruchalski, finished in third place in 1-meter diving at Division 2 state championships in 1998, earning all-state honors. "Marco is a raw talent, said Clark. He only competed in high school, yet made it to the all-state ranks. He is a multi-sport athlete and with a concentration in diving next year, he should make some large gains."

McCauley is a backstroke and freestyler who will add quality and depth. "I expect that Erin should see some big time drops over the next year, said Clark. "The competition within the team should help her progress to a higher level."

Murray is a two-time state champion in 100-yard breaststroke at Wisconsin's Division 2 state championships. He was named all-state in 1997 and 1998 in the 100 breast and 200 medley relay and was a state finalist the last two years in the 200 IM. He was also a junior national qualifier in the 400 medley relay the last two years. "I expect that Todd will challenge for the breaststroke spot on our relays in the near future, said Clark. He is an excellent student-athlete and is a great addition to our squad."

Polleya is an Illinois state meet qualifier who placed 28th in the 100 breaststroke. She was named a Central Suburban League Scholar Athlete in 1997 and holds school records in the 100 breast and 200 IM. "What Erin accomplished was through hard work on her own. said Clark. Erin has a lot of untapped potential. I suspect her best races are yet to come."

Smith was a runner-up in the 100 breaststroke and took third place in the 200 IM at the Wisconsin Division 2 meet in 1998. He was an all-state selection in the 100 breast and 200 IM last season and was a junior national qualifier in the 400 medley relay and the 400 and 800 free relays. "Mike is a great find, said Clark. He is still growing and developing at a great rate. He should be a factor on our relays as well as in his individual events."

Westfahl was a Wisconsin state high school qualifier in the 100 breast in 1996 and 1997. Krystal has all the attributes to be a solid athlete on our team, said Clark. With solid competition from her teammates in practice, she should progress well."

Clarks new recruits join Daniel Babcock (Verona, WI-Verona) and Adam Hanson (Verona, WI-Verona) who were signed in December.
