MILWAUKEE -

A weekend of Panther swimming proved worthwhile with a double dual meet sweep Saturday night at the Klotsche Center, only one night after splitting a double dual meet. The men's team topped MCC-rival UIC, 155-138, and won, 214-73, against Northern Iowa. On the women's side, UWM defeated UIC, 206-93, and edged UNI to a 156-143 final.

The Panther men took an early lead against both teams by winning the 200 medley relay. UWM pulled further ahead after winning five of the next six swimming events. Sophomore David Faust (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) won the 1000 freestyle and sophomore Matt Schmaling (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) won the 200 free, senior Bill Kuri (Wauwatosa, Wis./Marquette) won the 100 back, sophomore Peter Clark (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) won the 200 fly and freshman Josh Baseheart (Milwaukee, Wis./King) won the 50 free. Clark also won the 500 free and Baseheart took home first in the 100 fly as well. UWM's 200 free relay team of Schmaling, Kuri, Clark and Baseheart also won. Junior diver Nick Seider (Mequon, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran) grabbed second in both diving events.

For the Panther women, they as well started out by winning the 200 medley relay, but the highlight of the meet came in the second event. Freshman Jen Kedinger (Fond du Lac, Wis./Goodrich) swam into the UWM record books by breaking the 1000 freestyle record by almost five seconds. Previously, the 10:49.02 record was held by Kristen Keepers and was set in the 1992-93 season. Kedinger's record stands at 10:44.17 for the event.

Sophomore Beth Watt (Waukesha, Wis./West) kept up the Panther action as she won the 200 fly in a personal best time of 2:12.16 and took first in the 100 fly. Freshman Kristin Cefalu (Janesville, Wis./Milton) finished first in the 200 breast and Kedinger again took the top spot, this time in the 500 free. Senior diver Amanda Maas (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) beat out the competition in the three-meter diving, followed by teammates freshman Becky Rubel (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) and senior Jamie Cyganiak (New Berlin, Wis./West) for the next two spots.

"We had a really tough weekend," swimming coach Dave Clark said about the back-to-back meets. "Two very tough sets of meets in two days really tested our team, especially after a very tough week of practice. Setting a school record and having a number of best times should really excite our program heading into the end of the semester."

The Panthers are next in action Saturday Nov. 18 at Illinois State for a dual meet at 6:00 pm in Normal, Ill. The men improved their record to 4-3 on the season, and the women upped theirs to 4-2 overall.
