MCC Champions: UWM Women Swimmers
Men's team come in fourth
March 8, 2001 Milwaukee- The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee women's swimming and diving team came out on top after a hard-fought three-day MCC Championship meet at Brown Deer's Schroeder YMCA Feb. 21-24. The Panther women won with 811.50 points, edging Wright State, who finished with 749.50 points for second place. The men's squad finished with 574 points, earning them fourth place of the six MCC contenders. Eventual champion contributors included sophomore Amanda Chan (Homewood, Ill./Bolles School) and juniors Kelly Goetsch (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) and Leslie Brock (Appleton, Wis./North). Chan set school records with wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:05.75 and 2:20.20, respectively, and her time of 2:08.92 in the 200 individual medley also set a new school mark. Her time in the 200 breast is a new MCC record. Chan went on to be named the MCC Women's Outstanding Performer at the meet. Goetsch won the 200 free and Brock won the 500 free with school-record times of 1:54.81 and 5:05.94, respectvely. Brock also set a school record with a time of 4:37.13 in the 400 IM. Four Panthers set freshman records at the meet. Danielle Bradley (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton SE) set new freshman highs with times of 2:12.47 in the 200 IM and 4:41.70 in the 400 IM. Also marking their territory in the Panther record books were Kari Kinney (Madison, Wis./East), Jen Kedinger (Fond du Lac, Wis./Goodrich), and Kristin Cefalu (Janesville, Wis./Milton). Kinney recorded a time of 2:11.32 in the 200 fly, while Kedinger posted a time of 5:07.85 in the 500 fly, both freshman records. Cefalu also set two freshman records with her performances in the 100 and 200 breast events with times of 1:07.08 and 2:25.34, respectively. Other women's record-setting performances included the 400 medley relay, as well as the 400 and 800 free relays. Chan and Goetsch teamed with senior Randi Fletcher (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and sophomore Beth Watt (Waukesha Wis./West) for the victory in the 400 medley with a time of 3:57.77. Chan, Watt, Goetsch, and freshman Kathleen Owen (Prior Lake, Minn./Lakeville) broke UWM's school record in the 400 free with a time of 3:36.08. And Chan, Brock, Goetsch, and Kedinger teamed up again to set a new school mark of 7:42.99 in the 800 free. On the men's side of the meet, sophomore Matt Schmaling (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) and junior Nic Seider (Mequon, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran) each won individual conference titles. Schmaling was victorious in the 200 free, while Seider won in the three-meter diving event. The 400 free relay team of Scmaling, freshman Josh Baseheart (Milwaukee, Wis./King), sophomore Peter Clark (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay), and senior Bill Kuri (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa) also won a MCC title. Baseheart set a new school and freshman record in the 100 free in a time of 45.64, while also setting a freshman record in the 50 free with a time of 20.85. Kuri broke his own school record with a time of 50.88 in the 100 breaststroke. UWM's Dave Clark was also honored as the Women's MCC Coach of the Year. |
