UWM Men's Swim Team In First Place After Day Two Of MCC Championship
Panthers win three events, set several school records
Feb. 25, 2000 CLEVELAND - The UWM men's swimming and diving team sits in first place and the women are in third after the second day of the MCC Swimming and Diving Championship in Cleveland.
The Panthers won three events and broke several records on Thursday.
The winning 200 freestyle relay team of Bill Kuri, Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg, Daniel Babcock and Matt Schmaling broke not only the two-year-old UWM record, but also the five-year-old MCC record, when it turned in a time of 1:23.17.
Schmaling, a freshman, added an individual championship when he won the 50 freestyle with a time of 51.02.
Last year's MCC Diver of the Year, senior Todd Hill, took a step towards repeating the feat when he won the one-meter diving event with a score of 450.30. His score was 33 points ahead of second place.
Leslie Brock, a sophomore, set a school record with her time of 5:10.61 with her fourth-place finish in the 500 free.
The Panthers dominated the women's three-meter diving event, with UWM competitors finishing in third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh place. Freshman Krystina Herzog led UWM with her 387.25 points. Jamie Cyganiak, who led all competitors after the preliminary round, finished in fourth place. Amanda Maas (fifth), Jenny Rabe (sixth) and Erin Hallen (seventh) also placed in the finals for the Panthers.
Freshman David Faust broke a freshman record with a time of 4:37.10 in the 500 free with his fifth-place finish in the 500 free.
The MCC Swimming and Diving Championship continues through Saturday.
