UWM Men's Swim Team Ties Western Illinois; Women fall at Western Illinois
Wisconsin, UW-Green Bay are next opponents
Feb. 1, 2000 Milwaukee -- The UWM men's swimming and diving team shared a first-place finish at Western Illinois over the weekend with a 121.5-121.5 final score. The tie marked coach Dave Clark's first tie in his 19-year coaching career. The women's team lost to WIU, 147-96. The Panthers were paced by five first-place finishes on the men's side and four on the women's. Individual first-place finishes on the men's side included senior diver Todd Hill (West Bend, Wis.) in the one-meter dive, freshman Peter Clark (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) in the 200 fly and junior Bill Kuri (Wauwatosa, Wis.) in the 200 back. The 400 medley relay of Kuri, Mike Smith (Brookfield, Wis.), Andrew Babcock (Verona, Wis.) and Kevin Van DenWymelenberg (Green Bay, Wis.) and the 400 free relay of Smith, Babcock, his brother Dan Babcock (Verona, Wis.) and Matt Schmaling (New Berlin, Wis.) both won their events. Freshman David Faust (Eden Prairie, Minn.) set a new freshman record in the 1000 freestyle (9:54.64), breaking the record of 9:56.30 set by Doug Kuntz (Brookfield, Wis.) in 1996. On the women's side, winners included Amanda Maas (Plymouth, Wis.) in both the one- and three-meter dives and Rachel Smith (Superior, Wis.) in the 200 breast. The 400 medley relay team of Randi Fletcher (Libertyville, Ill.), Smith, Beth Watt (Waukesha, Wis.) and Kelly Goetsch (Plymouth, Wis.) also won its event. The team returns to the water on Feb. 4 with the Panthers and UW-Green Bay compete at a triple-dual meet at Wisconsin. |
