Women Defeat Western Illinois on Senior Night at the Klotsche Center
Chan sets new record; Men come up short against WIU swimmers.
Jan. 27, 2001 MILWAUKEE - The UWM women's swimming team captured a big victory tonight at the Klotsche Center, defeating Western Illinois, 145.50-81.50. The men's team was unable to shake a large deficit early in the meet, finishing 132-110 behind WIU. On the women's side, diving proved stopless, as UWM took the top four spots in each event. Senior Amanda Maas grabbed first in the one-meter and sophomore Krystina Herzog finished first in the three-meter diving. Sophomore Amanda Chan set new heights in the 200 breaststroke as she finihsed in a school-record time of 2:22.80. Chan also won the 200 IM. Other first place women finishes include freshman Jen Kedinger in the 1,000 free, junior Leslie Brock in the 200 free, sophomore Rachel Smith in the 50 free, junior Kelly Goetsch in the 100 free, and freshman Kathleen Owen in the 200 back. The 400 relay medley also took first. Junior Nic Seider earned first in both diving events on the men's side. Freshman Josh Baseheart topped the 50 free and sophomore Peter Clark won the 200 fly. Senior Bill Kuri won the 100 free. The men's 400 free relay also won. Tonight was also honored as Senior Night for the Panthers. Seven swimmers were honored in their last home swimming meet. They are Bill Kuri, Joel White, Jamie Cyganiak, Randi Fletcher, Dana Handel, Amanda Maas, and Erin Schneider. At their last homestand, Kuri won 100 free, White finished second in the 200 back, Cyganiak placed fourth and third in the three- and one-meter diving, Fletcher finished fourth in the 200 back, Handel finished fifth in the 200 fly, Maas went one-two in one- and three-meter diving, and Schneider finished third in the 200 fly The women's team is now 5-3 on the season and the men are 4-5. Both teams are next in action February 2 at 5:00 pm in Madison, when they are scheduled to swim against Wisconsin and MCC-rival UW-Green Bay. |
