Wheaton, Ill. - Josh Baseheart collected his second meet record in as many days as the UWM men's swim team took third place at the Wheaton Invitational.

Baseheart captured first place in the 50 free final after setting the meet record at 20.82 in the preliminaries. All was not good news for Baseheart, however, as he injured his finger touching the wall and did not compete in any other events on the day.

UWM's women took second overall in the invitational, finishing with 808.50 points. Wheaton College was first, scoring 832.50. On the men's side, UWM came in third place with 671 points. Wheaton captured the men's title with 858 points and Hope College was second with 728.

Milwaukee also captured the top two places in the men's 1650 free, as David Faust and Michael Belting took the top two spots. Faust's time of 16:17.32 also set a new meet record, breraking the old mark by nearly a second.

"We did about as well as we expected," head coach Dave Clark said. "We had some really good times, and we did pretty well considering all the injuries we've had."

In the women's final of the 1650, UWM took three of the top eight positions, as Jen Kedinger took third, Sarah Walby finished fifth and Erin McCauley placed sixth.

Another record fell, this one on the women's side. Julie Olson captured the freshman record in the 100 back as she placed second in the event with a time of 59.41. Olson broke the old record of 1:00.00, held by Crystal Varadi. The time was also just .4 off the school record, held by current Panther assistant coach Heather Czappa. Fellow freshman Kim Bach took fourth in the same event, finishing in 1:02.14.

Kristin Ceflau also captured a first place finish, as she won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.19. Cefalu was joined by another pair of Panthers in the finals of the 200 breast, as Rachel Smith placed fifth and Leslie Brock finished seventh. Erin Pollyea finished first in the consolation final, giving her ninth place overall in the event.

Kelly Goetsch added a second place finish in the 200 free to the women's point total. Goetsch was joined by a trio of Panthers in the top ten, as Sarah Walby finished seventh, Jen Kedinger took ninth and Jenn Moore placed tenth.

UWM also had six of the top 11 finishers in the women's 400 IM. Kari Kinney placed third, followed by Danielle Bradley in fourth and Kristin Cefalu in fifth. Leslie Brock took eighth place in the event, while Natalie Oettinger finished tenth and Amanda Schmitt claimed 11th place.

The Panthers will now prepare for a training trip to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., during the winter break. Milwaukee resumes collegiate competition on Jan. 19, 2002, when Butler visits the Klotsche Center Pool. The meet begins at noon.

"We've got a chance to let some people get healthy," Clark said. "We'll rest and heal up a bit and then get ready to swim really fast again."
