Milwaukee - The UWM women's swimming and diving team dropped a close match to Illinois State Sunday afternoon, falling by a score of 157-143.

UWM picked up a pair of wins from freshman Julie Olson in the 100 and 200 backstroke. Olson clocked her best time in 2001 in both events, cutting just over three seconds off her 200 time.

The Panthers also dominated the diving events, with Becky Rubel and Krystina Herzog each winning one event. Rubel took first place in 3m and finished fourth in the 1m, while Herzog placed third in the 3m and first in 1m.

Kristin Cefalu also picked up a win, taking first in the 200 breast. Cefalu and the rest of the panthers swept the top three places in the event, with Rachel Smith and Erin Pollyea picking up second and third. The trio also took second, third and fourth in the 100 breast on the day.

Beth Watt picked up the only other Panther win on the day. Watt took first place in the 200 fly and also grabbed second in the 100 fly.

Head coach Dave Clark was pleased with UWM's showings in the meet, though he admitted the result could have been better.

"We had a number of really good swims and some really good times," Clark said. "Unfortunately, it's tough to win when you've got last year's MCC Outstanding Swimmer of the Year (Amanda Chan) and several other good swimmers cheering from the sidelines."

The Panthers will return to the pool when they wrap up the fall semester portion of the season at the Wheaton Invitational on Dec. 7 and 8. The Panther divers will also compete that weekend, taking part in the Notre Dame Invitational.
