Panther Men's Swimmers Grab First Two Victories on the Season
UWM women defeat UIC, fall to Northern Iowa
Nov. 10, 2001 Cedar Falls, Iowa - The UWM men's swimming team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday night at Northern Iowa, defeating UNI and Horizon League member UIC. The Panther women split on the day, losing to Northern Iowa but cruising to a victory over the Flames. Freshman Michael Belting and sophomore Josh Baseheart helped pace the men's team to the double victory. Belting grabbed three individual titles, winning the 1000 free, 500 free and 200 free, and was also a part of the men's 400 freestyle relay team that also took first place. Baseheart captured titles in the 50 free and the 100 free, completing the sweep of the freestyle distances. Baseheart also narrowly missed out on the triple, getting just out-touched at the wall to finish second in the 100 butterfly. He was also a part of the winning 400 free relay team. Senior diver Nic Seider also chipped in with victories in both diving events. Seider's scores were also good enough to qualify him for NCAA Zone qualifying. On the women's side, senior Beth Watt captured a pair of wins, taking first place in the 100 and 200 butterfly, while sophomore Kristin Cefalu took first in the 200 breaststroke to help pace the Panthers. The women's team resumes action on Sun., Nov. 18, when they take on Illinois State at the Klotsche Center Pool at 2 p.m. The men's team is off until the Wheaton Invitational on Dec. 7-8. |
