Milwaukee - The UWM men's and women's swimming and diving team split their hosted double dual meet against MCC-rival Butler and Northern Illinois. The Panther men defeated the Bulldogs, 169-60, but fell to the Huskies 143-98, changing their overall record to 2-3. On the women's side, the Panthers were victorious over Butler, 173-63, and edged NIU to the last event, falling 122-120.

Against Butler, the men capitalized on taking second and third in the 400 relay medley and grabbing the top spot in the 1000 free when sophomore Peter Clark (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) finished in 9:54.94. The men's top swimmer in each event finished ahead of Butler in every event but the 200 individual medley where junior Adam Hanson finished third behind Butler's Brett Balhoff.

Against NIU, the Panthers trailed early and were not able to overcome NIU's strong freestyle performances. NIU opened the meet with a victory in the 400 relay medley and later captured the top two spots in the 50 free to help seal their victory. NIU had nine first-place finishes overall, three of which were freestyle events.

Other Panthers capturing firsts in the meet include sophomore Matt Schmaling (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) in the 100 free, junior Nick Seider (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) in the three-meter diving, and the 400 free relay team of freshman Josh Baseheart (Milwaukee, Wis./King), senior Bill Kuri (Wauwatosa, Wis./Marquette), Clark, and Schmaling.

In the women's half of the meet, the UWM easily topped Butler, 173-63, as the Panthers finished with six first-place finishes, including both diving events. The women also topped Butler's swimmers in all but one event when freshman Kathleen Owen (Prior Lake, Minn./Lakeville) and Danielle Bradley (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton SE) finished behind Butler's third and fourth place swimmers.

The Panthers edged NIU down to the very last event as the lead flip-flopped between the two teams for most of the night. To start the meet, UWM's 400 relay medley team of senior Randi Fletcher (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville), freshman Kristin Cefalu (Janesville, Wis./Milton), sophomore Beth Watt (Waukesha, Wis./West), and junior Kelly Goetsch (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) beat NIU's team by one-one hundredth of a second for first place. In the final event, the 400 free relay, the women fell slightly behind opening the swim, but gained ground midway through. However, the Panthers were unable to catch up, as they took second in 3:42.90, behind NIU's time of 3:40.09.
