Panther Swimmers Fall Again
UWM loses a pair of dual meets by 15 points each
Nov. 3, 2001
Macomb, Ill. (Nov. 3) - The UWM swimming and diving teams fell to defeat for the second consecutive night on Saturday, falling at the hands of Western Illinois. The margin of victory for the Leathernecks was 15 points for both the men's and the women's meets. The men's team was paced by a trio of double-event winners as the Panthers captured first place in every freestyle distance. Junior captain Peter Clark took first place in both the 200 free and the 200 fly, while sophomore Josh Baseheart captured a first place finish in both the 50 and the 100 free, the latter in a time of 46.78, good for a Brophy Pool record. Freshman Michael Belting chipped in with a pair of victories, one in the 1000 free and one in the 500 free. Another freshman, Sean Tepper, added the only other Panther victory in the 200 back. On the women's side, the Panthers kept the meet close due to strong depth, but UWM only had first place finishers in the 100 free and 200 breast and both diving events. Senior Kelly Goetsch captured the victory in the 100 free, sophomore Kristin Cefalu took first in the 200 breast and sophomore Hannah Burgard won the 1m diving. Junior Krystina Herzog got the UWM victory in the 3m diving competition. UWM, currently battered by numerous injuries, has a week to rest and prepare before facing Horizon League rival UIC and Northern Iowa next Saturday in Cedar Falls, Iowa. |
