UWM Men Drop Season Opener
Panther swimmers fall to Northwestern, 139-90
Oct. 26, 2001 Milwaukee - The UWM men's swimming and diving team lost their first match of the season Friday night to Northwestern by a score of 139-90. Senior Nic Seider and sophomore Josh Baseheart captured the only two Panther victories on the evening. Seider won the 1m diving competition and placed second in the 3m event. Baseheart took first place in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 47.24. Baseheart also added a third place finish in the 50 freestyle, finishing just a half second behind race winner Nick Barnes of Northwestern. Junior Peter Clark also added a pair of second place finishes for UWM. Clark touched the wall a tenth of a second ahead of the third place finisher in the 200 free, and he also scored second place in the 200 butterfly, finishing behind one of Northwestern's All-Americans from a year ago, Tony Swanson. Though the Panthers dropped the opening meet of the season, head coach Dave Clark was not unhappy with his team's performance. "I thought we swam pretty well," Clark said. "Some of the freshmen had some really nice swims, and a few of our veterans looked good, too." Clark said he was especially pleased with the showings of Baseheart, junior David Faust and freshman Michael Belting. "Belting's 10:00 in the 1000 free was very nice," Clark said. "And Baseheart's 100 free was a great swim. "Faust's 500 free was as good as he swam all of first semester last year with the exception of Wheaton," Clark said. The men will be back in action and joined by the Panther women on Sunday as they travel to Northwestern to take part in the Northwestern Relays. The meet begins at noon. |
