CHICAGO - Kelly Goetsch and Kristin Cefalu each won an event Friday night as the UWM women's team moved into third place at the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships.

The women moved from fourth to third place during Friday's action, and stand Goetsch took first in the 200 free, coming from behind in the final 25 yards to defeat UW-Green Bay's Kaye-Lani Laughna, while Cefalu led end-to-end in winning the women's 100 breaststroke to give the Panthers their first two champions of the meet.

The Panther women got off to a strong start with the 200 medley relay, as the team of Julie Olson, Kristin Cefalu, Beth Watt and Kelly Goetsch combined to take third place. The men countered with a fourth-place finish, as Sean Tepper, Nick Bowers, Jason Procto and Josh Baseheart got Milwaukee's men to a strong start.

Leslie Brock took third in the women's 400 IM. She was joined by Danielle Bradley, who took eighth in the event. Kristin Cefalu won the consolation final for ninth place, while Kari Kinney, Erin McCauley and Amanda Schmitt added 12th, 13th and 16th places. The men got a 12th-place finish from Justin O'Keefe, while Carey Kammel, Jamie Mantle and Michael Ryan combined to place 14th, 15th and 16th in the event.

The Panthers also got points from Julie Olson and Beth Watt in the 100 butterfly, as Olson took eighth and Watt was eighth. The men's 100 butterfly saw Josh Baseheart take third place, while Jason Procto added an eighth-place finish.

Jen Kedinger and Sarah Walby added to Goetsch's victory in the 200 free by placing 10th and 11th. In the men's 200, Michael Belting and Peter Clark combined for seventh and eighth places, while David Faust finished 15th.

While Cefalu won the 100 breaststroke, she wasn't the only Panther to score in the event. Amanda Chan took sixth place and Rachel Smith was seventh. Erin Pollyea added an 11th-place finish. In the men's 100 breast, Nick Bowers took seventh, while Todd Murray and Ben Creydt were 12th and 13th.

Julie Olson just missed out on giving the Panthers three straight women's victories, as she finished second in the 100 backstroke. Sarah Caldwell added a seventh-place finish. In the men's 100 back, Jason Procto finished third and Sean Tepper added an eighth-place finish. John Batty also claimed 15th-place in the event.

In the night's final event, the 800 free relay, both the men's and women's teams took third place. The team of Sarah Walby, Jen Kedinger, Leslie Brock and Kelly Goetsch moved up from fifth place to third in the final two legs of the race. In the men's race, Michael Belting, Jason Procto, Peter Clark and Josh Baseheart also came from fifth place in the final two legs to finish third.

In the day's diving action, Nic Seider finished second in the 3m preliminaries, while Hannah Burgard and Krystina Herzog advanced to tomorrow's 1m finals with seventh and eighth place finishes. Erin Hallen took ninth place, while Becky Rubel finished 12th.

The championship wraps up tomorrow with preliminary swimming heats at 10:30 a.m. and diving preliminaries at 2:30 p.m. The finals of both swimming and diving events will begin at 6 p.m.
