MILWAUKEE - The UWM women's swimming and diving team defeated Northern Illinois, 134-108, on Friday night in DeKalb, Ill., while the men's team dropped a close decision, 129-109.

The women won despite the absense of two of the top swimmers, Kelly Goetsch and Danielle Bradley, both of whom were out sick for the meet. Jen Kedinger and Krystina Herzog each picked up a pair of wins for the Panthers as they claimed just their second victory over the Huskies in the past 10 years. Kedinger claimed first place in the 500 free and the 200 free, while Herzog took first in both of the diving events. Becky Rubel finished second behind Herzog in both diving events.

The men's team took first in four of the 13 events, with Michael Belting, Jason Procto, Josh Baseheart and Nic Seider taking the only Panther victories. Belting won the 1000, while Procto claimed first in the 200 back. Baseheart took first in the 50 free and Seider earned a split on the diving boards, taking first in the 3m and finishing third in the 1m.

"Their men's team has three studs and we couldn't handle them," head coach Dave Clark said. "But it's good that our women won, NIU normally has very powerful women's teams, and it's only the second victory we've had over them. They're still a very good team, but tonight we were just better."

The Panthers also got a victory from Kristin Cefalu in the 200 breast and Sarah Walby in the 1000 free. UWM also took first in both the men's and women's 400 free relay.

Milwaukee returns to action on Feb. 8 when they travel to Madison for a three-way dual meet with Wisconsin and UW-Green Bay in the final tune-up before the Horizon League Championships.
