The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's first athletic director and long-time football coach, Kluge starred at Milwaukee State Teachers College as an All-Conference guard and tackle. He also captained the track and field teams. As football coach from 1931-55, he compiled a record of 74-74-15, including six championships (1931, 1938, 1939, 1942, 1947 and 1948). When MSTC became the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Kluge was appointed Athletic Director and served until 1969.
