New Mascot Character To Be UnveiledOct. 4, 2007 MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee athletic department is soliciting the input of its fans and students in naming its new mascot character. The need for a new Panther character has developed because the longtime UWM mascot character, Victor E. Panther, has graduated from the University. So, a new mascot character has been designed and will take over mascot duties beginning with Panther Madness Oct. 12. The project for redesigning the mascot costume has been done by Olympus Flag and Banner, with funding provided by the UWM Student Association. "The Student Association feels a strong obligation to help further the mission of UWM as well as help foster school spirit and pride in our fellow students," Student Association President Rob Grover said. "Because of this, we felt it was important to step forward and support the development of a new mascot character to fill the void left by the graduation of Victor E." But, still to be decided is the name of the Panther character, which will appear at most UWM sports events and eventually appear on clothing in the UWM Bookstore. Fans can email their naming suggestions to newpanthermascot@hotmail.com until 5 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 10. The best choices will be considered by personnel from the athletic department and the Student Association, with the newly-named mascot introduced at Panther Madness on Oct. 12. |
