Chambliss Added To Student-Athlete Support StaffSept. 26, 2006 MILWAUKEE - Former Big Ten basketball standout Sharif Chambliss has been added to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee athletic department staff as a Student-Athlete Academic Support Tutor/Mentor, department academic advisor Tom Vollman announced today. In the newly created position, Chambliss will provide both acacdemic and personal support to UWM student-athletes. In particular, he will work closely with student-athletes in need of extra assistance in helping them achieve success in the classroom. "Sharif should be of great assistance to a number of student-athletes in our department," Vollman said. "He understands the demands placed on student-athletes and understands what you need to do to success on the court and in the classroom as a Division I student-athlete. A lot of our student-athletes should feel comfortable looking to him for guidance and assistance, and they will all know he is speaking from experience and with their best interests in mind." Chambliss, a Racine native who attended St. Catherine's High School, played three seasons at Penn State before tranferring to the University of Wisconsin for his final season of eligibility. He started 30 games for the Badgers during the 2004-05 season, helping UW to the Elite Eight. He finished his career eighth in Big Ten history with 255 three-pointers while scoring 1,106 career points. The hiring of Chambliss adds another piece to the academic support system in place at UWM. Student-athletes are now also taking advantage of the new computer lab and study rooms in the academic assistance center, located inside the new Pavilion on the UWM campus. The academic support system at UWM has helped student-athletes maintain a strong department-wide grade-point average, with the department GPA at 3.196 after the spring semester. |
