UWM Claims League Women's All-Sports AwardMay 28, 2008 MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has claimed the Horizon League's Women's All-Sports Trophy, the league announced at its annual Executive Council meeting awards dinner tonight. This marks the seventh time in the last eight years UWM has won the women's award. UWM also finished tied for second in the race for the McCafferty Trophy, the league's all-sports award. Cleveland State captured that honor for the first time, besting Milwaukee and Butler by just two points. The Panthers won regular-season titles in women's soccer and volleyball, tied for second in women's basketball and also placed second in women's cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field to total 27 performance points. Butler was next in the women's race with 23 points. In narrowly missing out on a fifth McCafferty Trophy, UWM also won league titles in men's indoor and outdoor track and field while claiming a second-place finish in the league baseball championship and a third-place finish at the league swimming and diving championships. "Milwaukee continues to set the bar high for all-sports success and winning a third straight women's award illustrates the university's commitment to a quality all-around program," Horizon League Commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone said. "Congratulations go out to everyone associated with the UWM athletics program on a very successful year." "I am very proud of the hard work our student-athletes and coaches put in to make it another successful year of Panthers' athletics," UWM Athletics Director Bud Haidet said. "Our teams continue to do a great job of meeting and exceeding high expectations, both on the field and in the classroom. We also enjoy tremendous support from our administration, the campus and the community, which makes our success possible. This is something everyone associated with UWM can be proud of, and we look forward to continuing our growth and success in the coming years." |
