Panthers Get Past Loyola, Advance To League Title Game11/6/2009 - Sophomores Makenzie Gillaspie and Sarah Hagen each scored goals to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Loyola in the 2009 Horizon League Championship semifinals Friday evening at Engelmann Field. With their ninth-straight win, the top-seeded Panthers (11-5-3) advance to Sunday's league championship game. They will face No. 3 Valparaiso in their 11th title game appearance in 16 years. The Crusaders got past No. 2 Wright State, 2-1, in the day's first semifinals matchup. Sunday's championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Engelmann Field. The winner receives the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers are in search of a second-straight tourney berth and the seventh in school history. Jena Berg had 14 kills to lead three players in double figures as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee captured a 25-17, 25-22, 25-21 win over Wright State Friday night at the Klotsche Center. The Panthers (10-14, 7-6) have now won five-straight matches. UWM hit a solid .271 in the match, as Kerri Schuh added 12 kills and Mary Beth O'Brien pitched-in with 11. Meanwhile, Milwaukee's defense limited Wright State to a .093 hitting clip, as the Panthers collected 11 blocks. Jessica Woods led Wright State (10-19, 2-12) with 10 kills. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball team continues its 2009-10 exhibition season by hosting UW-Parkside Saturday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Milwaukee hung on to beat Cardinal Stritch, 74-72, in its exhibition opener Wednesday. The Panthers played without senior guards Tone Boyle and Ricky Franklin but got 20 points from James Eayrs in holding a distinct inside advantage. Now, the Panthers turn their attention to the Rangers, who beat UWM in 2006 but have since lost exhibition contests to Milwaukee in both 2007 and 2008.
